Legends of Kathmandu Valley

According to ancient Buddhist legends, Kathmandu Valley was once a vast lake. It is believed that the Bodhisattva Manjushri cut through the valley wall with his magical sword, allowing the water to drain and making the valley suitable for settlement.

Hindu traditions tell a different story, attributing the creation of the valley’s opening at Chobhar to Lord Krishna, who is believed to have used his divine power to drain the lake. Interestingly, geological evidence confirms that Kathmandu Valley was indeed submerged by a lake in the distant past, with the Bagmati River eventually carving its way through the Chobhar gorge.
